DGCA Pilot medical – Class 1 – Class 2

Class-II medical (Step 1)

The best way to find if you meet the criteria is through Class 2 medical exams. These are DGCA approved centers that conducts the medical exams and also inform you of the shortcomings and ways to correct it. There are about 150 centers spread across the country to choose from and appointments are generally not an issue. A CA35 assessment form is generated by the medical center after completion of your exam and forwarded to DGCA for your PMR (previous medical record) number generation. You will also receive a medical assessment report from DGCA. PMR number is unique to each candidate and does not change. It is maintained by the medical cell at DGCA headquarters, Delhi.

DGCA Class 2 medical makes you eligible to apply for Student Pilot Licence to initiate your practical flight training. Also, once trained you will be able to fly recreationally on a Private Pilot Licence.

Class 2 medical assessment has a validity of 2 years until attaining 40 years of age. Thereafter, extension of 1 year is given after every successful renewal. In India, getting Class 2 is mandatory before you can proceed for Class 1.

Class-I medical (Step 2)

After receiving the assessment report from DGCA, you are eligible to apply straightaway for Class 1. Appointments can be obtained hassle free through EGCA portal for Air Force medical centers and usually coordinated through email or phone directly for Civilian centers.

Class 1 medical is of 3 types:

  • Initial – first medical
  • Renewal – done every year till 60 and every 6 months thereafter.
  • Re-initial – required when the renewal was not done for 2 years.

DGCA Class 1 medical makes you eligible to apply for Commercial Pilot Licence and makes you eligible to take an Airline job. Also, since it is higher category of medical certificate, you will enjoy Class 2 medical privileges along with it.

Class 1 medical assessment has a validity of 1 year until attaining 40 years of age. Thereafter, extension of 6-12 months (depends upon type of operational role) is given after every successful renewal.

SPECIAL CASES

Medical exam in the following cases are only conducted at AFCME, New Delhi, IAM IAF Bangalore and MEC(E), Jorhat.

  • Any medical which is specifically advised to be done at these centres as per AIC/ Medical Assessment.
  • Cases of special medical (after disease/ physical condition)
  • Cases of review after a period of Temporary Unfitness for assessment of fitness are conducted at IAM/ AFCME/ MEC(E).
  • Appeal cases of Class I/ II Medical examinations at IAM/ AFCME.
  • Medicals at age 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 and all medicals between 60-65 at IAM/ AFCME/MEC.
  • Re-initial Medical. Class I medical where a renewal has not been done for more than 2 years.
